Native Edibles

Close to Home Organics is conducting trials and growing out plant stock for a range of native edibles. Some of these crops are being wildcrafted, while others are being grown as field crops. We are working on making a line of native edible products, to be available in the near future.

Our interest in native edibles comes from a desire to align our agricultural practices with the natural environment where we grow. Crops adapted to our local ecosystem are more resilient in the face of climate uncertainty and take less from the environment while growing.

Nonetheless, many native edibles are increasingly rare because of loss of habitat. Many berries and ferns grow in coastal rainforests, taking root in fallen cedars, in shady environments. As we lose our forests, we also lose the potential for many native crops.

Farming at Glen Valley Organic Farm offers us a unique opportunity. We have forested area, open fields, forest edges, ponds and slopes to experiment with growing. Some of the native crops we are growing and/or experimenting with include:
  • Camas
  • Black Raspberries
  • Huckleberries
  • Highbush Cranberries
  • Fiddleheads
  • Wapato
  • Nettles
  • Saskatoon Berries
  • Miner's Lettuce
Keep an eye out for these items as we develop these crops in the future.
